In the simplest of terms, psychotherapy involves a lot of talking, connecting, exploring, sharing, thinking, feeling, and even laughing. It takes place in a safe, secure room with two comfy chairs; one for the client and one for the therapist. The client can use the time to talk about any issue that is causing them distress and the specially trained therapist will help the client to explore their problem from new perspectives and find solutions. Counselling is safe, liberating and powerful… it can even be fun!
Psychotherapy is for everyone. Our clients are men and women of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. They come to therapy because they are struggling to process a painful life experience and want some professional support. Often our clients have good lives and positive relationships with their family and friends, but they don’t want to burden those people with their problems. Our therapists are trained to listen, understand, support and encourage you for as long as it takes for you to start feeling better. We will never judge you, get frustrated or lose interest. Psychotherapy can help you to gain control over your life and your happiness. It can teach you how to use your brain in new ways that make it possible for you to let go of distressing thoughts, increase positive feelings, and overcome destructive patterns of behaviour. You can use these new skills to improve your relationships, grow in confidence, and start living the life of your dreams. Despite what you may have been told in the past, there are very few mental health conditions that are permanent. Even conditions such as Bi-Polar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Drug Addiction can be entirely eliminated with the right kind of support. You are not broken. You’re just stuck. And with help you can change everything.
Each session lasts 50 minutes. Most clients choose to have therapy once a week, especially in the beginning when they need the most support. The total length of a course of therapy depends on each individual client’s needs and personal circumstances. Minor problems can be solved in as few as 1 – 6 sessions. Moderate problems take up to 12 sessions. Severe problems take 20 or more sessions. Many clients choose to continue having therapy for as long as they find it beneficial.
